Month-in-Review: August

The month of August was a good one. I started the month with renewed vigor (aka ginger) coming off my birthday high just a couple of days before so I was determined to make the best of the month and attack my goals with increased determination. I mapped out a plan of attack (we are going to die on the line) and so far haven’t strayed off track. I’m hoping to keep up this pace till the end of the year.

I also hit the month off with a wedding where your girl was looking like a premium spice; see evidence below.

The lovely couple

I travelled to Dallas, TX where I caught up with old friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. The wedding was that of a good friend from grad school and it was such a good feeling watching him walk his bride down the aisle. I still vividly remember when he first met her and the early stages of their relationship and I couldn’t be more happy for them as they start the beginning of the rest of their lives together.

Work was very chill this month and admittedly I struggled with feelings of insecurity, unfulfilment and dissatisfaction. My good friend was on hand to remind me that no matter how small and insignificant my work may seem to me, it is valuable to someone and is serving a purpose otherwise I wouldn’t have a job. That helped me see things from a different perspective and left me feeling more grateful for what I have.

The one highlight of my month was Sam Smith!!! I had a blast but no need to recount my experience. If you haven’t already, please go read my post where I shared my lessons from the show. Graza :D. In other news, social life was okay. Summer is winding down and even though I didn’t have a wild time, I sure had a lot of fun moments and made a couple of new friends. I am currently out of town enjoying the long weekend and catching up with old friends. Travel diaries alert 😉

I’m slowly coming to an appreciation and acceptance of where I currently am in life. I cannot fast track the process neither do I have the power to automatically place myself where I want to be. What I can do is make the best of it and stay on track to achieving my goals. The rest is out of my control. It’s been very tasking to get here but slowly but surely. As someone who prides myself in being very patient, I’m learning that there’s levels to patience and I still have a lot to learn. I will complain no more about the things I cannot change and dedicate my energy to what I can.

I was reminded yet again that life is transient when I heard the news early this week of a very promising young Nigerian basket baller who collapsed after he bent over to untie his shoe laces right after his regular basketball practice and died shortly after. He was an otherwise healthy 25 year old with hopes and dreams and a very bright future ahead of him and it’s so unfortunate that his life was cut short. There is a GoFundMe dedicated to raise money for his memorial and funeral expenses and you are welcome to donate. Again, we don’t really have any control over what happens to us. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, take advantage of today and live your best life. Tomorrow is not promised.

What I’m Listening To: Been feeling Teni the Entertainer’s music a lot. I can’t count the number of times I have played Askamaya, Wait and Fake Jersey this month. Now I’m on a mission to convert my friends to fans so I don’t enjoy her sweet music alone. I’ve also listened to Kuami Eugene a lot (thank you Spotify algorithms) though I’m grateful to my Ghanaian friends who talked about him first. My friend also put me onto Jacob Banks (he was featured on Adekunle Gold’s Ire Remix) and I’m really enjoying his EP so shalla to you Frank. I tried to jump on the Drake vibe again since he just released a new album (I used to really like his music) but ko werk. I will give it one more shot before I give up altogether.

What I’m Reading: Still on Swipe to Unlock. It’s becoming a drag at this point though I’m learning a lot of new information. I just need to sit down and dedicate more time to it than I currently am so I can move on to the next book. I have like 20 books in line lol. Also, a friend and I are looking to start a book club focused on African Literature. Hit me up if you’re interested in joining

What I’m Watching: Nothing. We are attacking our goals with full force and slaying while at it and distractions aren’t welcome for now.

iKid (:

Well not really. The only thing I watched so far is the Handmaid’s Tale which I’ve been following very closely with only one more episode to go which I’m saving to savor. It’s very intense and in the words of some, disturbing, but interesting and comes highly recommended from me.

Well that’s a quick recap of my month of August. How did August go for you? Feel free to share in the comments below. Have a great weekend and happy new month! Hope September brings you great news and lots of laughter.
